Among those arrested were alleged DeCavalcante family consigliere Frank Nigro and crew boss Charles “Beeps” Stango. Others named in the bust were Anthony Stango, John Capozzi, James Heeney, Paul Colella, Mario Galli, Rosario Pali, Nicolas Degidio, and Luigi Oliveri.

According to reports Stango wanted to whack a mobster in the Elizabeth, NJ crew of the DeCavalcante family outsourcing the hit to an outlaw bikers. In a transcript of a conversation recorded by the undercover officer Stango was unhappy that the DeCavalcante family had to answer to the Gambino crime family in New York.

“Milk, Milk [referring to the family’s street boss who was not charged in this case] his whole f**kin’, Milk’s family was the root of the tree. Oh he started this whole thing. [lt’s been around a while now]. See his uncle the underboss of consiglieres since the beginning of time. They come right from Sicily to here.

“This is Sii- … okay this proves he’s the oldest crew in the country. They start, they originated the five families. Okay? And now we run under the f**kin’ Gambinos.”

In a sworn affidavit from Robert Conrad a FBI Special Agent also alleges that the DeCavalcante family of the New Jersey mafia operates closely with the Gambino family of the New York mafia. This is definitely a significant blow to the New Jersey mob.

Charles “Charlie the Hat” Stango a captain in the DeCavalcante crime family snared by feds three months ago as part of a murder plot against a rival mobster is hanging tough while his fellow mobsters are set to cop plea deals. The three year long operation targeted the New Jersey mafia and included tape recorded talks of the plot to murder DeCavalcante family mobster Luigi Oliveri. According to sources Charlie’s son is set to agree to a plea deal as soon as final details are ironed out along with fellow mobster Oliveri. The elder Stango who is being detained with out bail along with Nigro and Colella all named as part of the murder plot have yet to agree to any tentative plea deals. Whitey charged with his part on drug dealing and prostitution is expected to cop a plea similar to DeCavalcante family associate Nicholas DeGidio.

DeGidio was charged with selling cocaine to an undercover FBI agent during the time at which Stango was charged. The charges against DeGidio carried a maximum sentence of 40 years but is now facing a max sentence of five years as to his plea agreement. Its believed that the plea being worked on for Whitey Stango will be similar. The cases against Charlie Stango, Frank Nigro, and Paul Colella have been adjourned until August.

The feds say this recent operation shows that the mafia in New Jersey and the DeCavalcante family specifically is still operating and maintains at least somewhat of a leadership hierarchy.

An undercover operation into the New Jersey mafia back in March led to arrest of capo Charles Stango and members of his crew along with family consigliere Frank Nigro for plots to open a prostitution business, commit murder, and distributing drugs. Ten alleged members and associates of the DeCavalcante crime family were rounded up in all including Stango’s son Anthony Stango. According to the feds the elder Stango was running the Jersey based crew from Nevada. He was captured via wiretap having several conversations with his son Anthony talking over plans to open a legitimate club which would function as a front for a prostitution business. Stango also met with an undercover agent which had infiltrated his crew to plot the murder of Luigi Oliveri a member of a rival crew in the New Jersey mob.

Two of the DeCavalcante family associates busted John “Johnny Balls” Capozzi of New Jersey and Mario Galli of Toms River have agreed to plea deals. They both plead guilty to charges of distributing more than 500 grams of cocaine and are now facing a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. Anthony Stango also agreed to a plea deal back in August and plead guilty to plotting to open a high end prostitution business and distributing cocaine. Another associate of the mafia crew Nicholas DeGidio also previously agreed to a plea deal and plead guilty to drug dealing and prostitution charges.

The cases against Charles Stango, Frank Nigro, and family soldier Paul Colella are still pending. Its still unclear if any of the three will be offered any kind of plea agreement or if they will be forced to take their chances in court. According to statements made in wiretap conversations by Stango the New Jersey mafia is  now under the influence of the New York based Gambino crime family.

Anthony “Whitey” Stango a reputed member of the New Jersey mafia family known as the DeCavalcante crime family was sentenced to six years in prison on various charges. He is the son of longtime New Jersey mob captain Charles Stango and was busted along with his father, family consigliere Frank Nigro, and other alleged mobsters and associates. The younger Stango now 34 agreed to a plea deal last August on charges of attempting to set up a high end prostitution business and drug distribution. Along with his six year prison term the judge also tacked on five years of supervision following his release.

According to the feds Anthony sold cocaine on at least seven occasions to an undercover FBI agent and was caught on wiretaps discussing the prostitution business with his father. The elder DeCavalcante family captain is facing his own charges related to the prostitution ring along with charges that he planned to kill a mafia rival. According to the feds Charles met with an undercover FBI agent who had infiltrated the mob crew to plot the murder Luigi Oliveri a member of a rival New Jersey mafia crew.

Attorney Gary Mizzone argued that the younger Stango simply got washed up in the notoriety of Cosa Nostra and actually only had a distant relationship with his father. But prosecutors pointed to the long criminal history for Stango which included drug use, burglary, probation violation, and passing bad checks. Stango said in a statement that he regretted his actions and that he hoped to get through this and be a better father to his two kids. Stango has been ordered to report to prison on March 15 to begin his sentence and was ordered to avoid organized crime figures and gang members between then and now.

Ten members and associates of the New Jersey mafia also known as the DeCavalcante crime family were busted last year for plotting to kill a rival mobster, drug trafficking, and prostitution.

From a federal court in Newark U.S. District Judge William Walls sentenced DeCavalcante family associate John Capozzi to 30 months behind bars. Capozzi, 36, was charged with distributing over 500 grams of cocaine after selling a half of kilo of coke to an undercover F.B.I. agent. He plead guilty via a plea deal last December and will also have to serve two years of supervised release.

Among the others arrested in the New Jersey mob sweep was DeCavalcante capo Charles “Beeps” Stango his son mob associate Anthony “Whitey” Stango and alleged family consigliere Frank Nigro. The younger Stango has already pleaded guilty to selling cocaine and a prostitution-related charge and was sentenced to six years in prison. The elder Cosa Nostra captain was caught on a wiretap talking to his son about setting up a prostitution business and met with an undercover F.B.I. agent that infiltrated the mafia crew to plot the murder of a rival mobster, Luigi Oliveri.

Charges are still pending against both Charles Stango and Nigro although many of the others involved in the case have agreed to plea deals. According to prosecutors, this bust proved that organized crime is still active in the Garden State and that the now diminished DeCavalcante family was still in business.

According to reports Charles Stango, an alleged captain in the New Jersey mafia has agreed to plead guilty to murder for hire charges.

The 73-year-old DeCavalcante crime family mobster was recorded conspiring with other mobsters to have rival wiseguy Luigi Oliveri whacked. An FBI undercover agent also recorded Stango making threats against the mafia rival saying that he should have been put in a wheelchair for the rest of his life and had to meet death. His arrest was part of a three-year sting by the feds that led to charges against 10 members and associates of the Cosa Nostra family in Jersey.

“Charles (Charlie The Hat) Stango”

The plea deal agreed to by Stango calls for him to serve 10 years in prison according to a report from ganglandnews although he could get up to 12 years because of violations of his post-prison release restrictions. DeCavalcante family consigliere Frank Nigro and mob associate Paul Colella were also charged with being accomplices in the murder plot along with drug dealing and prostitution. But all charges against both men were dropped back in August by the U.S. Attorney’s office in a somewhat surprising twist. In a statement, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said that moving forward with a racketeering prosecution against the duo was not in the interests of the United States at that time.

The feds were able to record conversations between Stango, Nigro, Colella, and the undercover agent discussing the plot to kill Oliveri. According to the reports Stango who was located in Las Vegas at the time wanted Nigro or Colella to get permission from the DeCavalcante family hierarchy in Jersey to whack Oliveri. According to an arrest complaint from FBI agent Robert Conrad Stango who had a hit team ready and waiting was recorded multiple times pressing for an answer but neither Nigro or Colella would commit to the hit being sanctioned. During a recorded call back in February of 2015 Stango told Colella: “I wanna know if it’s a yes, or if it’s a no,” “Colella told Stango that he would try to get an answer for him, and that he would call him back the next day.”

In a call a couple of days later Colella told Stango an unnamed NJ mafia leader said to do what you feel like you should do but Stango wanted a direct answer saying “Go over it again with him and the two of youse decide, whether yes or no’, you know,” according to Conrad. Multiple calls followed between the three but neither mobster would tell Stango that he had the go-ahead to whack Oliveri. This didn’t seem to stop Stango from considering moving ahead with the hit later discussing ways to handle it with the undercover agent like throwing grenades into Oliveri’s business and a staged robbery where he would be shot to death. It seems the rambling of both Nigro and Colella were not enough to the feds to push forward with the charges seeing neither agreed to or passed along orders for the potential mafia hit.
